TheEcoboomer

(CNET - Commentary) - Tesla Motors is helping destroy the notion that electric vehicles are green cars with unfortunate compromises.

The company last night unveiled the Tesla Model X, a sleek-looking cross between a minivan and SUV with clever “falcon wing” doors and a new electric all-wheel drive system. People can start placing reservations tomorrow for the Model X, which is expected to be available late next year with prices in the $55,000 to $75,000 range before tax incentives and rebates.

Beyond making an attractive crossover, Tesla has shown how electric vehicles open up new design possibilities. The Model X isn’t just an electric version of competing SUVs, it’s a luxury vehicle that has useful features its internal combustion or hybrid cousins couldn’t have.

The key to Tesla’s cool design is the powertrain, built around a flat battery pack that extends from the front to rear wheels under the car. This provides a low center of gravity for good handling, but also allows for substantially more interior space than a vehicle with a transmission running under it.

In demonstrations with journalists this week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stood up inside the car to show the ample available space, a feature that makes loading or entering and exiting easier. The Model X has three rows of seats and is able to hold seven adults and their luggage, something other SUVs makers could not claim.

The electric powertrain is also behind another key feature of the Model X–its optional all-wheel drive system, built around one motor for the front wheels and another for the back.

The precision and instant power the motors provide, which can be adjusted thousands of times a second by the car’s computer, will make it a very functional all-wheel drive vehicle capable of driving anywhere, according to Tesla.

The falcon wing doors, meanwhile, don’t benefit from the Model X being electric, but they help make Tesla’s cars distinctive and appeal to the luxury clientele.

Execution
The electric powertrain under the Model S and now the Model X are a platform on which Tesla intends to build other variants. During the unveiling of the Model X last night in Los Angeles, Musk reiterated his desire to make a “mass market” electric vehicle with a lower price point, too.

Tesla’s electric power train brings its multiple advantages–great acceleration, good handling, and lots of internal space.(Credit: Tesla Motors)

Of course, having a disruptive technology and an attractive product isn’t enough. Tesla, whose stock price has been volatile since going public, also has to execute its business plan with few mistakes.

Competitor Fisker Automotive has been beset with numerous delays in bringing out its Fisker Karma extended-range luxury electric car. The company earlier this week said will have to lay off workers and renegotiate its Department of Energy loan because it has apparently not met milestones specified in the contract.

As Tesla is phasing out sales of the Roadster, the company’s financial success hinges largely on sales of Model S and the Model X. The Model S is still expected to come out later this year with higher volume shipments next year.

No one can say with certainty how many consumers are willing to buy a cool-looking EV sedan or crossover. But you can’t fault Tesla for not embracing disruptive technology or thinking big.

TheEcoboomer

Following the intention pronounced during the Spanish EU presidency to introduce the electric car on the Spanish market within the first six months of 2011, Miguel Sebastián, the minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade government recently announced that the government will make available/reserve 255 million euros in the next two years.

Of this total amount, about 80 million euro will be reserved for subsidizing the purchase of electric cars, up to 20% of the purchase price with a maximum subsidy of 6.000 euros per car. This subsidy is initially designed for Spanish cities with more than 50.000 inhabitants. Taking into account that the car accounts for 15% of the national transport with a total energy consumption of 36,2%, this sector is the most energy-consuming one in Spain.

It is no surprise that Spain declared to welcome the electric vehicle as a new model of energy efficiency in which manufacturers, regulators and energy companies have analyzed the opportunities and challenges posed by the introduction of vehicle electricity in urban environments, next to further integration of renewable energy and reduction of greenhouse gases. The ‘Plan de Activación del Ahorro y la Eficiencia Energética’ has to support the new model, starting by putting into circulation 2.000 EV’s and installing 546 charging stations in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. Purpose of the plan is to save 87,9 million litres of oil and to reduce 238 million tons of CO2 emissions. In 2014 about one million environmentally-friendly vehicles should be circulating on the Spanish roads, among which 250.000 full hybrid or electric rechargeable vehicles.

With the announcement, Spain is realizing the plans as described in the support letter for the electrical vehicle, that was signed by France, Germany, Portugal and Spain in March of 2010, in which among others was insisted on including European standard methods for charging. Several Spanish working groups were formed by AENOR to start to create standardization and accreditation standards, rules and regulations concerning electric vehicles in order to create a framework for electric vehicles in line with what is being done at European level.

Studies of Red Electrica in Spain demonstrated that in 2014 about 2% of Spanish wind energy will be wasted because of a low use of nocturnal energy. A widespread introduction of electric vehicles could minimize this problem. The country could take advantage of the energy surplus, as the majority of electrical vehicles are being recharged during the night. If it is up to Spain, one can use the traditional telephone cells on the streets, to moderate and transform them into charging points for electric cars. Only Madrid already counts 1700 cells that are adjustable.

The first models to enter the Spanish market are the Ion of Peugeot and the i-MiEV of Mitsubishi. With all the electrical models being offered on the European market, it’s not odd that Spain has chosen for the first model. Today the Peugeot – Citroën (PSA) car plant at Vigo in Spain is the company’s largest plant outside France. Besides that this PSA factory appears to be the largest employer in the region. But also Spanish manufacturer SEAT did not want to stay behind and introduced its new concept car, a fully electric vehicle called IBE. So far it is still only a concept, but sources expect the IBE with its new technology to become the next new model from SEAT that will be sold on the European market before 2014.

TheEcoboomer

2012 Mitsubishi i

Gas-free motoring options are expanding in 2012. Mitsubishi’s first all-electric car, the i, is now finding its way to retail customers. The four-door hatchback first went on sale in Hawaii last month, and Mitsubishi is now rolling it out at West Coast dealerships. Customers in California, Oregon and Washington were the first in the continental U.S. to take delivery of the i.

The i (formerly called the i-MiEV) seats four and draws power from a 66-horsepower electric motor and 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The EPA lists a 62.3-mile driving range, but this number varies based on city and highway driving. Mitsubishi estimates charging time at 22 hours on a 120-volt outlet and seven hours on a Level 2 240-volt charging station.

The 2012 Mitsubishi i starts at $29,125; the $7,500 applicable federal tax credit brings the price to $21,625. But how much does it cost to drive? The EPA lists an annual fuel cost of $550. It uses the national average electricity rate of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour and an annual driving range of 15,000 miles to calculate the i’s operating costs.

Mitsubishi plans a gradual rollout for the i, with nationwide availability by this summer.

TheEcoboomer

Gasoline could cost 4.5 cents a gallon more starting as early as this week, and it’s not because of rising oil prices.

It’s because Congress declined to renew the 30-year-old federal subsidy for ethanol, letting it expire Sunday.

Ethanol, denatured grain alcohol used as a proven smog-cutting ingredient, currently makes up 10% of most gasoline-based motor fuel for general use, so-called E-10. In a few areas, E-85 fuel, 85% ethanol, also is available. E-85 can be burned only by vehicles equipped for “flex fuel.”

How much the end of the subsidy could add to gas prices, and how soon, is yet to be seen. Ethanol blenders got a 45-cents-a-gallon tax credit, which amounts to 4.5 cents for the amount blended into each gallon of E-10 fuel.

It’s hard to calculate the immediate impact. Oil prices and ethanol stocks are in flux. And unknown is the impact of another move by Congress: dropping the 54-cents-per-gallon tariff on ethanol imports. Brazil is a leading global producer of ethanol made mostly from sugar cane.

In the U.S., ethanol primarily is made from corn. That has made the ethanol subsidy controversial because of allegations that it raised food prices. The estimated $6 billion annual cost of the subsidy also has added to the federal deficit.

The end of the subsidy, however, has caused barely a ripple among ethanol backers or corn producers:

Corn prices remain high because of healthy exports, especially to China. E-10 is now standard, and more demand for ethanol is guaranteed by an escalating federal alternative fuel mandate requiring more use of it.

“Things have changed. The marketplace has changed,” says Matt Hartwig of the Renewable Fuels Association, which represents ethanol makers. “Today, ethanol is 10% of the nation’s gas supply.”

Trading in benchmark crude opens this week at $98.83 a barrel. Crude prices averaged $95.09 in New York trading last year, up from $79.64 in 2010 and $62.11 in 2009, the Associated Press reports. The Energy Department expects oil prices in 2012 to average $98 a barrel.

Gas prices averaged $3.28 for a gallon of regular (E-10) nationwide Monday, at the end of last week, according to AAA, up from $3.07 a year ago. E-85 ethanol averaged $2.95. But because cars can’t squeeze as much mileage out of every gallon of ethanol, the price when adjusted to equal the mileage of a gallon of regular was $3.88.

TheEcoboomer

The year 2011 was a landmark year for EVs. We witnessed regional launches of the Nissan LEAF and the Chevy Volt. These two plug-in cars were the start of a new era for electrified personal transportation. The current American car auto fleet, however, is enormous—and two models alone cannot create change on a large scale.

During 2012, these two plug-in cars will have—depending how you look at it—either competition in the marketplace or help in the movement to electrify transportation.

This coopetition includes the Ford Focus Electric, the much-anticipated Tesla Model S, and others. Pike Research predicts that more than 250,000 plug-in vehicles will be sold globally in 2012. Regardless of whether or not this prediction comes true, 2012 will bring more choices in vehicle style, brand, size, performance, and price, for cars with cords.

Here is my top 10 countdown of plug-in cars to look forward to in 2012:

10. LEAF and Volt (Expanded Markets): First on my list is expanding availability of the two cars that kick-started the new era of plug-in vehicles. General Motors rolled out the Volt in four stages during 2011, making it available nationwide at the end of the year. Canada and the UK can expect to see Volts in 2012. The LEAF began shipping to the UK, Japan, and some US states in 2011. Nissan says the LEAF will be available in all 50 US states by March of 2012.

9. Smart ForTwo Electric Drive: Daimler reports that it will launch its third-generation Smart ForTwo Electric Drive to 30 markets around the world in September of 2012. This is a three-month delay for the two-seater initially planned for June 2012. Daimler claims the delay is due to quality control issues at the battery supplier Li-Tec.

8. Honda Fit EV: The Fit EV is scheduled for release in Oregon and parts of California next summer. Only a few hundred cars are expected to reach US shores during 2012, with 1,100 scheduled for production during the next three years.

7. Mitsubishi i: The updated Mitsubishi i-MiEV has been shipping in Japan and the UK for several months. The town of Normal Illinois received hundreds of i’s in 2011 as part of a test program and publicity campaign. The first regularly ordered i was delivered to an owner in Hawaii in December 2011. The national-wide US rollout is scheduled for July 2012. The i is a nice addition to the available EV portfolio because at $29,125 (before state and federal incentives) it is one of the most affordable highway-capable EVs.

6. Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid: With the “Prius Goes Plural” campaign, Toyota has added the Prius V, Prius C, and (relevant to this topic) the Plug-in Prius (PIP). The Prius has a loyal following among green drivers. PIP will be the Prius with the highest MPG rating in the Prius family. This will make it the car of choice for many Prius fans, even with its price premium over the standard model. PIP will be available in 15 states in spring 2012 with nationwide availability in 2013.

5. Ford Focus Electric: Ford initially announced that these were going to start shipping in December 2011. One or two may go out the door, but any real volume won’t happen until Spring 2012. I am looking forward to seeing the EPA rated range and price information. This is the first pure EV of this era from one of the Big 3. It will be a bellwether.

4. Fisker Karma: First promised in 2009, Karma reservation holders have been repeatedly delayed. And with each delay the price ratcheted up, from an initial $80,000 price tag now to $106,000 (as of Dec. 13, 2011). There were a few token deliveries in 2011, including handing key-fobs to Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and Colin Powell. 2012 should be the year for mere mortals, although you will need six figures of cash to make it happen.

3. Toyota RAV 4 EV (Redux): This vehicle is a joint effort between Toyota and Tesla. The original RAV 4 EV was a favorite among the millennium era EVs. It is scheduled for sale in mid-2012. Initially sales will be limited to California.

2. Ford C-Max Energi: The Ford C-Max Energi is a plug-in hybrid version of the Ford C-Max wagon (or compact multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV, as it is referred to in the UK). The 2013 Ford C-Max Energi is planned for launch in North America in 2012, and Europe in 2013.

1. Tesla Model S: This is the car I am most looking forward to driving. Tesla followed the tech development model with an alpha and beta phases in 2011 and production samples are now on the road. Tesla plans to build and sell 6,500 units in 2012. However, unless you are already a reservation holder, you are out of luck because 6,500 people have already put down $5,000 each to get a place in line to buy one. Deliveries are expected to start mid-2012.

There are other plug-in cars—from smaller and less proven companies—that could make it to market in 2012, most notably the Coda Electric Sedan. But Coda, as well as BYD, Zap, Zenn, and Wheego—are dark horses in the emerging market. Of course, the only thing that would be truly surprising in this tumultuous nascent industry would be a year with no surprises.

TheEcoboomer

Should you have overlooked seeing Revenge of the Electric Car within the cinema or just want to view Carlos Ghosn, Elon Musk and Bob Lutz push their individual businesses to be able to receiving EVs on your way, mark your work schedule for January 24th. That is once the DVD version in the movie hits, and it’s going to provide repeat viewers a few enjoyable extra supplies when they’ve already worn out the lines on the primary feature.

The particular huge special extra will be the 35-minute screen that took location just after your premiere screening during the Tribeca Film Festival. The DVD producers compose that, “We specifically love the moment when Wall Road Journal columnist Dan Neil says, ‘you’re not heading to see electric powered tractor trailers out there in the near future…’ and Tesla Generators CEO Elon Musk replies, ‘yes you will,A then the crowd cheered. In .

Other bonuses include additional footage (Iceland?) and celebrity selection interviews. The film, which can be still playing in some theaters, will likely be visiting Netflix at the same time. If you are interested in proudly owning it, you could obtain the film from Amazon for $21.Ninety nine or directly from the particular distribution organization with regard to $29.99. Why invest your extra dollars? The actual movie producers write:
As an independently distributed film we now have accomplished lots of function ourself to bring this motion picture to you, and we inquire which you make sure you contemplate purchasing the DVD straight from our distributor : which brings far more cash straight to the filmmakers along with much less to the middleman.

TheEcoboomer

Tesla Motors presents: 2012 Model S electric sedan

While Tesla Motors is ideal recognized for the Roadster, an all electric super-sports-car, their eyes all along have been on a company plan to develop modest priced electric vehicles. The Tesla Model S, to go on sale in 2012, is the subsequent step on their program, and at this time they announced its price tag and solutions. As a high priced Sedan with a $49,900 base price, it really is more affordable than the Roadster, but nonetheless pricey sufficient to be out of reach for the typical household sedan budget.

The 2012 Model S electric sedan value announced today is in effect for all current U.S. reservation holders. They say that “volatility” in the currency markets prevents them from announcing pricing for clients outside the U.S.

The Tesla Model S prices are based on the battery pack size, the amount of alternatives, and there’s a Performance version in the Model S with higher speed as well as a commensurately higher price tag. The base costs are

40 kilowatt-hour, 160 miles range: $49,900
60 kilowatt-hour, 230 miles range: $59,900
85 kilowatt-hour, 300 miles range: $69,900
85 kilowatt-hour, efficiency model, 300 miles range: $79,900
Advertisement

Yes, even though the majority of the electric cars out there are fiddling about with tiny battery packs and short ranges, Tesla is delivering a large battery pack plus a commensurately big range. For comparison the Nissan Leaf has a 24 kilowatt-hour battery pack and claims to deliver a 100 mile range. When these prices are considerably higher than the typical family sedan, they are not out of line with luxury sedans for example the Lexus’s or BMW’s from the globe.

Top speeds range from 110 miles/hr to 130 miles/hr, as well as the 0-60 miles/hr times range from a respectable 6.five seconds to a very quickly 4.four seconds within the performance model. All models have an 8 year warranty on the battery pack. Deliveries are expected to begin inside the summer of 2012 for the two 85 kilowatt-hour models, in the fall of 2012 for the 60 kilowatt-hour model, and inside the winter of 2012 for the 40 kilowatt-hour model.

The Tesla Model S contains a special selection of charging alternatives. By default it comes with a single ten kilowatt charger (for comparison, the Leaf has a three.3 kilowatt charger, plus the Ford Focus Electric has a 6.6 kilowatt charger) that delivers as much as 31 miles per hour of charging. For an extra $1500 your Model S can have two chargers, for a total of 20 kilowatts of charging speed, or up to 62 miles per hour of charging, but not surprisingly this would require a 240 volt 85 amp circuit. Lastly, Tesla has created what they call the Supercharger for the 85 and 60 kilowatt models. It will be readily available in a network of Supercharger stations operated by Tesla, and will provide up to 160 miles per 30 minutes of charging, which indicates totally replenishing the 85 kilowatt-hour battery pack in about an hour.

In years past Tesla had claimed the model S would involve rapid charging AND quick battery swapping capabilities. They have delivered on the rapid charging promise, but not so on the quickly battery swapping plan. Maybe the car has been created so that, with the ideal tools, the battery pack might be promptly swapped, but what’s missing is a network of battery exchange stations for instance Improved Location is operating to create.

The 2012 Model S electric sedan can plug into any power socket, and just isn’t limited towards the J1772 charging port utilised on other electric cars. This means flexibility to plug in anywhere irregardless of whether a charging station is accessible, or not. It appears that Tesla’s Supercharger isn’t compatible with the CHADEMO common (including the quickly charger port on the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiev).

All models include things like a 17 inch touch screen infotainment display on the dash. All vehicle, media, communication, and cabin controls are displayed on this screen.

Tesla appears to be on a successful roadmap to bringing the 2012 Model S electric sedan to production on time later this year. Tesla’s master program is for each and every new auto model they develop to lower the price and improve the production volume. Exactly where the Roadster was sold in the thousands at a price tag well more than $100,000, the Model S really should sell in the 10′s of thousands at costs shown above, and their subsequent model need to have an even bigger production at an even lower cost.

TheEcoboomer

Enhanced Electric Cars

Boost domestic hydrocarbon production? Yes. Boost the fuel economic climate of cars on the road at this time? Yes again. But an even bigger key to curbing US hunger for imported oil lies with plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) … a entire lot a lot more of them, based on the non-partisan advocacy group Securing America’s Future Energy (Safe).

Powering up automobiles with plugs instead of pumps is very important to breaking US dependence on oil, much of which comes from sources the nation would rather not support, says Robbie Diamond, SAFE’s president and CEO.

“With as considerably as 90 percent of international oil and gas reserves held by national oil providers – quite a few of that are in nations that share neither our values nor our goals – the global oil marketplace is not a free market place,” Diamond stated. “Electrification provides the chance to break the oil monopoly in the transportation sector.”

As early as it is for the US electric car industry, sales are already off to a far better get started than they were for hybrid vehicles, which became accessible a decade ago. Plug-in automobile sales have passed the 15,000-mark in their very first full year of availability, Safe notes. By comparison, hybrid sales in the US totaled 9,350 in 2000, the very first full year in which they had been accessible.

The figures for electric cars must enhance even more inside the subsequent few years, with far more than 30 new models set to enter the market place over the subsequent two years, Diamond said. To preserve the momentum in adoption going, he added, the US wants to make certain it gives powerful support and policies for plug-in electric vehicles.

“It is important to put the cost of supportive policies in context in the total cost of our oil dependence,” Diamond said. “Every technology experiences challenges, and electric vehicles are no unique. But to cease, or perhaps slow down support for an market that has the prospective to dramatically enhance our economic and national security would only jeopardize the nation’s prosperity and security.”

Safe cites many different statistics to support the significance of electric cars. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for example, have calculated that US oil dependence has completed the nation extra than $5 trillion in economic damage because the 1970s. The country’s military alone incurs an annual price of in between $67.five billion and $83 billion from that dependence, according to the RAND Corporation. And also the 2011 US trade deficit for crude oil and refined merchandise will most likely be about $300 billion.

“Plug-in electric vehicles are a strategic weapon to combat oil dependence,” Diamond mentioned. “Electricity is generated from a diverse set of domestic power sources – from nuclear and natural gas, to coal and renewables. Electrical energy rates are also a lot more stable than oil rates, and there is an existing infrastructure with spare capacity already in location.”
